REALLY EXCITING THINGS!

This is my 100th post. And you know what that means....

Giveaway time!

Here's the deal. I couldn't decide what to give away. I took a poll a while ago and it was a pretty even split across the board between something crocheted, something baked, and a book. So rather than crochet a book and then bake it... I'm going to give away a sweet little package of three unrelated things! (Or shall I say, seemingly unrelated. Since they do all have my interest in common.)

Item 1:
One of these little guys! Winner can choose the color of the top and spots and I will customize it (as long as I already have those colors - and I do have a LOT of colors). The eyes will be closer together too. Every time I see this one I think his eyes are too far apart.

Item 2:
One copy of N.K. Jemisin's Hugo nominated book The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. I read this last year and really enjoyed it, and I think you will too.

Item 3:
One dozen non-blurry chocolate cookies with white chocolate chips. If you live outside of Utah, I cannot guarantee their freshness, but I will bake them within 24 hours of mailing them.

There. Hopefully that appeals to most of my audience...

Now for the rules. US only (not that I think I have any readers outside of the US, but you never know - and now I really don't since I've gone and alienated them). To enter, leave a comment naming a book or game or link to a recipe you enjoyed recently. If you tweet about this post or share it on Facebook, you can earn up to one extra entry, but let me know in your comment if you did (and mention me in your post to make it easy on me - I'm @WombatWife on Twitter). Lastly, the giveaway closes in ONE WEEK because that puts us right on the ides of March. So comments close March 15th at 9pm MST and I'll post the winner that night in a new post. Winner will be chosen by a random method not yet determined.

And now... I think I should probably consider eating something besides toast for dinner. Yes, it's been one of those evenings.

  1. Today I made a sliced Rice Krispy loaf. Here's the recipe I used:

    1/4 cup butter
splash of vanilla (probably about 1/2 teaspoon)
12 jumbo marshmallows (they're about the size of a block of 9 AA batteries arranged to make the most cube-like shape)
5 cups of Crispy Rice Cereal product

Melt everything except the cereal into a slurry over medium heat, then mix with cereal. Place in bread pan, let cool. When cooled, slice into 3/4 inch slices, then add a bag for presentation.

Here's a picture of my "Nine Grain" loaf I made.

  4. My son is allergic to gluten, dairy, and soy, so I try to make foods that he would like. This is my most recent success: Creamy Pasta Primavera: http://thericeoflife.wordpress.com/2012/03/09/creamy-pasta-primavera-trial-dairy-free-gluten-free-soy-free/

  5. I am about to make this potato salad: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/potato-and-bacon-salad/detail.aspx

I know I will enjoy it because I've had it before. I was never really a Potato Salad fan until I had this one (bibbidi-bobbidi-bacon!), though I do recommend adding some green onion.

  6. I've been enjoying Zelda: Twilight Princess lately. (Yes, it came out several years ago, but I was in grad school then.)

  8. I haven't read anything since Mistborn: Alloy of Law which was fantastic. Also, I watched John Carter twice this weekend and enjoyed every minute of it.

  9. The best book I've read recently was The Rook by Daniel O'Malley. It was awesome. Unfortunately cooking and I have not been getting along in recent times. My mother-in-law's German pancake recipe has been a wonderful last-ditch friend of mine lately.

    1/2 c milk
    6 eggs
    1 c flour
    2ish TBS sugar
    splash or two vanilla
    pinch salt
some cinnamon (this isn't a part of her recipe, but I like to add it)
    2-4 TBS butter

Brown the butter in a 9x13 pan by putting it in the oven while preheating it to 350 degrees. Mix everything else together until smooth. Pour the batter into the browned-buttered pan and bake for 15-20 minutes.

    1. I actually had a copy of Rook on hand that was waiting for my attention, so I read it. All of it. Today. Good recommendation! I'll review it tomorrow, or sometime soon.

  11. Norwegian pancakes:
3 C. flour, 3 eggs, 3 Tbsp. sugar, 4 drops vanilla, 3 C. milk, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1/4 C. melted butter, 1/4 C. brown sugar. Blend together into very smooth batter, fry in butter-greased frying pan. (Tilt the pan after you pour the batter in to make them very, very thin.)

  12. Mom and I have both been reading the Alchemist series, by Michael Scott. (Except he's not done writing it yet.) The series begins with The Alchemist, followed by The Magician, The Sorceress, The Necromancer, and The Warlock.

  13. I've been going over Voyage of the Dawn Treader again. I think it's my favorite Narnian book other than The Magician's Nephew.

  14. Easy lemon pie: (recipe tweaked since the last time I posted it)
Heat oven to 350. Get a 9" unbaked pie shell ready. In a blender, mix 4 large eggs, 1 1/2 C. sugar, 1 cube melted butter, and the zest and juice of 1 1/2 large lemons (or two small ones). Blend till smooth. Pour into pie shell; bake 40 min. Cool and eat!
